Replai vs WAHA: turnkey WhatsApp AI vs a dev-only API
WAHA is the unofficial WhatsApp HTTP API for developers. Replai is the turnkey product built on the same protocol. Which one's actually right for you?
If you've researched WhatsApp automation, you've probably seen WAHA — the unofficial WhatsApp HTTP API. And maybe you're now looking at Replai. Here's the honest comparison: these aren't really direct alternatives — they sit at different layers of the stack.
Same disclaimer as our other comparisons: we're the Replai team. We've tried to be fair, but we have a perspective.
At a glance
| | WAHA | Replai | |---|---|---| | What it is | Unofficial WhatsApp HTTP API (developer tool) | Turnkey WhatsApp AI assistant (end product) | | Who it's for | Developers and integrators | Small-business operators (non-technical OK) | | Setup | Self-host or use WAHA Cloud; write your own bot logic | Pair via QR, drop in a doc, done | | AI included | No (you bring your own) | Yes (Claude + Whisper + embeddings) | | Knowledge base | DIY | Built-in (PDF, Google Doc, FAQ URL) | | Multilingual / voice / images | DIY | Built-in | | Time to first reply | Hours to days (depends on what you build) | Minutes | | Pricing | Free (self-host) or per-instance (Cloud) | $19–99/month flat, AI included | | Best for | Devs building custom WhatsApp integrations | SMB operators who want a working product |
Where WAHA wins
Full control. WAHA is the protocol layer. You write all the logic. If your business needs are weirder than what any turnkey product covers — custom workflows, deep integration with your stack, complex routing rules — WAHA gives you the freedom Replai doesn't.
Free if self-hosted. Run it on your own VPS, no per-message fees, no monthly bill. (Operational cost is yours: hosting, monitoring, maintenance, debugging the unofficial-stack quirks.)
Open source. Audit the code, fork it, contribute back. Important if compliance or sovereignty matters to your customers.
Multi-language API clients. WAHA exposes HTTP endpoints so you can call it from Python, Node, Go, Ruby, anything. Useful inside an existing dev team.
Where Replai wins
You don't need a developer. Pair a number, drop a doc, you're done. No code, no Docker, no API calls. The product replaces the need to build WhatsApp automation in the first place.
AI is built in. Replai ships with Claude integration, Whisper transcription, vector knowledge base, multilingual auto-detect, vision for receipts and photos. With WAHA you'd build all of that on top — and maintain it.
Ban-mitigation is the product's responsibility. Rate limiting, jittered scheduling, warm-up routines, safety-net classifier on every reply — built in. With WAHA, all of that mitigation is on you to design, build, and tune.
Operator dashboard ships with it. Conversations, flag review queue, manual takeover, campaign management, lead-capture to sheets, billing. All shipped, no construction needed.
When to pick WAHA
- You're a developer (or have a dev team) and want full control
- Your use case is unusual enough that no turnkey product fits
- You need to self-host for cost / compliance / sovereignty reasons
- You're integrating WhatsApp into a larger product you're already building
When to pick Replai
- You're a small-business operator, not a developer
- You want a product that works today, not an SDK to build with
- You want AI features without writing the AI integration yourself
- You want ban-mitigation and operator tooling as part of the deal
- You'd rather pay $19–99/mo than spend weeks building + maintaining
The honest line
If you're a developer evaluating WAHA, the question to ask is: am I sure I want to build this? Building on WAHA is a project; Replai is a product. WAHA is the right answer when you have requirements no product covers. Replai is the right answer the rest of the time.
If you're not a developer and someone recommended WAHA to you, Replai is probably what you actually want. WAHA is a tool for engineers; you need a tool for your business.
