How to connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp Business: the routes that exist, what Meta bans, and what each costs

By Clement, founder of ReplaiPublished 6 min read

Quick answer

There is no official way to plug ChatGPT itself into a WhatsApp Business number. Meta's terms keep general-purpose assistants like ChatGPT off the WhatsApp Business Platform outside regulated markets, but a business may still use an AI model, OpenAI's included, to answer its own customers through the Cloud API. The other routes are Meta's own AI agent in the app, or an unofficial linked-device tool.

  • OpenAI offers no official way to connect ChatGPT to your own WhatsApp Business number.
  • Meta bans general-purpose AI assistants on its platform, but allows AI for your own customer service.
  • The Cloud API route means moving your number off the app or onto coexistence.
  • ChatGPT's own WhatsApp number works again only in the EEA, since July 2026.

People type "connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp Business" meaning two different things. Some want ChatGPT on their own phone, to ask it questions. Most want something like ChatGPT answering their customers on the business number. The first has a narrow answer; the second has four, and none of them is a ChatGPT button.

Can you connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp Business?

Not as such. OpenAI does not offer a way to link ChatGPT to a business's own WhatsApp number, and Meta's terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform keep general-purpose assistants like ChatGPT off it, except where regulators have forced access (Meta). What exists are routes to AI replies that use a model like OpenAI's, or Meta's own:

What happened to ChatGPT's own WhatsApp number?

OpenAI launched 1-800-ChatGPT on WhatsApp in December 2024, a contact anyone could message to chat with ChatGPT. On 21 October 2025 it announced that ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, citing a policy and terms change from WhatsApp, after more than 50 million people had used it there (OpenAI).

It came back, partly. OpenAI's help page now says ChatGPT is available again on WhatsApp in the European Economic Area, at +1-800-242-8478, with availability based on the country code of your WhatsApp number (OpenAI Help Center). Elsewhere it is not. Either way it is ChatGPT talking to you, not ChatGPT answering your customers. To have Claude or ChatGPT read and send on your own WhatsApp when you ask, see what a WhatsApp MCP server does.

What does Meta allow, and what does it ban?

Meta's terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform bar AI providers, such as makers of large language models and general-purpose assistants, from using the platform when that technology is the main thing they offer, rather than incidental to something else (Meta). That is the rule that pushed ChatGPT out. It applied to new businesses from 15 October 2025.

Two things sit outside the ban:

  • Your own customer service. A business using AI to answer its own customers is not what the rule targets, and Meta's own pricing pages describe replies powered by third-party AI. WhatsApp's business policy adds a condition: automated chats need prompt ways to escalate, such as to a person, a phone number or an email address.
  • Regulated markets. On 9 June 2026 the European Commission ordered Meta to restore free access to the WhatsApp Business API for rival general-purpose assistants in the EEA, on the terms in place before 15 October 2025, until its investigation ends (European Commission). Meta has appealed. Italy and Brazil took their own interim steps earlier.

So the question is not "can AI answer my customers on WhatsApp" but "which route, at what cost, and with whose model".

Four routes to AI replies on a WhatsApp Business number. Meta Business Agent in the WhatsApp Business app: official, the number stays on the app, free up to an allowance then Meta One plans from $14.99 a month. The Cloud API with an OpenAI model: official for a business's own customer service, the number moves to the API or to coexistence, Meta charges per message and OpenAI per use. The Meta Business Agent Platform: official, API numbers only, $2 per million tokens, about 4 to 5 cents a message. A linked-device assistant: unofficial, the number stays on the app, a flat monthly fee, with a ban risk.
There is no ChatGPT button: two routes use Meta's own agent, one needs the API and your own model, and one is unofficial.

Route 1: Meta Business Agent in the WhatsApp Business app

This is Meta's AI, not ChatGPT, and it is the only official route that runs inside the app itself, with no API account. Where it is offered, it sits under Tools, learns from your past chats, catalog, documents and website, and tells customers they are talking to AI. It is free up to a monthly allowance; past that, Meta One plans start at $14.99 a month. It is offered to select businesses in limited countries, and turning it on disconnects your linked devices.

If you cannot find it, read why the AI agent may not be showing; for the price of going past the free allowance, see whether the WhatsApp Business AI agent is free.

Route 2: the Cloud API with an OpenAI model

This is the closest thing to "ChatGPT on my business number" that Meta allows: your number on the WhatsApp Business Platform, a bot that sends each customer message to a model through OpenAI's API, and the reply sent back through Meta's Cloud API. It suits businesses with a developer or a Business Solution Provider (BSP) to build and host it.

What it takes:

  • Moving the number. A number in the WhatsApp Business app has to be deleted from the app before it moves to the API, and its chat history goes with it, unless you onboard through coexistence, which keeps the same number working in both and can sync up to six months of history.
  • Meta's fees. The API charges per delivered message, and since 1 October 2026 even service replies are billed past the free allowance. The breakdown of BSP and Meta fees shows what a month typically costs.
  • OpenAI's fees. You pay OpenAI for every reply the model writes, on top.
  • The human route. Customers must be able to reach a person.

Route 3: the Meta Business Agent Platform

Meta also sells its own agent to API numbers. It is priced at one global rate of $2 per million tokens, which Meta puts at about 4 to 5 cents a message, with spending caps you can set (Meta for Developers). It needs an API number, an eligible country and Meta's verification, and it excludes some industries, including finance, health, alcohol and gambling.

Route 4: a linked-device assistant

The last route keeps the number in the WhatsApp Business app and adds an assistant the way WhatsApp Web is added: as a linked device. There is no API account, no migration and no per-message fee. The catch is that it is unofficial: WhatsApp warns that linking an account to an unofficial app may lead to a temporary or permanent ban, so the risk is real and nobody honest can promise it away.

I build Replai, which works this way, so weigh this part accordingly. It pairs to your existing number in any country, answers in the language each customer writes in from your own website, documents and notes, and hands anything else to you. Plans are $19, $49 or $99 a month with the AI included. If the API route is more project than you need, see what it would answer for your business first, and read how WhatsApp chatbots work without the Business API for the full trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect ChatGPT to my WhatsApp Business number?

Not directly. OpenAI offers no way to plug ChatGPT into a business's own number, and Meta's platform terms bar general-purpose assistants like ChatGPT outside markets where regulators require access. What you can do is use an AI model, including OpenAI's, to answer your own customers through the WhatsApp Cloud API, or use Meta's own AI agent where it is offered.

Is there a ChatGPT number on WhatsApp?

Yes, but only in the EEA. OpenAI's 1-800-ChatGPT contact, +1-800-242-8478, left WhatsApp after 15 January 2026 because of WhatsApp's terms change, and is available again in the European Economic Area since July 2026, based on your number's country code. It is a personal assistant for you, not something that answers your customers.

Does Meta allow AI chatbots on the WhatsApp Business API?

For your own customer service, yes. Meta's terms bar AI providers from using the platform when the AI itself is the main thing on offer, which is what pushed ChatGPT out. A business using AI to answer its own customers is not affected, as long as customers have a prompt way to escalate, such as to a person in the chat, by phone or by email.

How much does it cost to run AI on WhatsApp Business?

It depends on the route. Meta's own agent is free in the app up to an allowance, then Meta One plans start at $14.99 a month. On the API, Meta charges per delivered message, or $2 per million tokens when its own agent writes the reply, about 4 to 5 cents a message. Your own OpenAI model adds OpenAI's usage fees on top.

Can I keep my WhatsApp Business app number and use the API?

Yes, through coexistence, which you set up through a Meta Solution Partner: the same number works in the app and on the Cloud API, and up to six months of chat history can sync. Without it, moving a number to the API means deleting it from the app first, and its chat history goes with it.
